The vines originate from a Heritage clone of Syrah brought to New Zealand around 150 years ago.

Gimblett Gravels is a designation encompassing a centuries old dried river bed in Hawke’s Bay that is believed to be the first in the New World where the ultimate boundary is defined by a distinct soil type. The vines are planted in the stoniest parts of the vineyard to a heritage clone of Syrah brought to New Zealand in the 1840s.

About

93 Points

"Beautifully peppery and vivid with lovely sweet black cherry fruit, some black pepper and clove, and some lovely grippy tannins under the sweet fruit. This is so drinkable but it also has a more serious side. Very fresh and a bit edgy and wild."

90 Points

"Medium to deep garnet-purple coloured, the 2015 Syrah opens with fragrant black cherry and crushed blackberry notes giving way to nuances of black pepper, roses and Provence herbs. Medium-bodied and delivering mouth-filling peppery black fruit flavours, it has a solid frame of rounded tannins and great length."

Hawke's Bay

In 1876, great floods swept through Hawke's Bay. When they subsided, the Ngaruroro River had changed its course and a vista of gravel was left behind in a warm, sun-filled valley, greened lightly with spring rain. On the right bank of this old river is a collection of different soil mixes, stone and mineral rich, ideal for growing Syrah, Bordeaux-style reds and Chardonnay.
